Mesh shelves & dividers – why, what, who and how?
Wire mesh decking, also known as mesh shelving or wire mesh shelves, is a popular storage solution in the warehousing, distribution, and logistics industries. These shelves are made up of a grid of wires, creating a strong and durable surface to safely store products.
SPACE OPTIMIZATION
In warehouse environments mesh shelves and dividers can help optimizing space and enhancing organization. By separating items efficiently, both in multiple sections and vertically, you can make better use of available space and avoid wasting valuable storage space.
SAFETY
Mesh shelves and dividers can also help improve safety in a warehouse. They can help prevent items from falling off shelves and potentially causing harm to workers or damaging other products.
DURABILITY
Made of durable steel that can withstand the wear and tear of a busy warehouse environment.
VISIBILITY, LIGHT & AIR
Unlike solid shelving, mesh shelves increase visibility, allow light to pass through and ease the air circulation in the warehouse, which saves energy for the whole building.
FIRE PROTECTION
Another critical advantage of mesh shelving is that it is compliant with ESFR (Early Suppression Fast Response) requirements. ESFR is a fire protection system that uses high-pressure water to quickly suppress fires. With mesh shelving, the water can easily penetrate the shelves, ensuring the rapid spread of water in case of a fire, and thus minimizing the damage.
CAPACITY
When it comes to choosing the right mesh shelving system, capacity is an essential consideration. Mesh shelves are available in a range of weight capacities, so it is important to select a system that can handle the weight of the goods being stored. So, there are a couple of questions to answer:
- If pallets are being used, are they always placed on the beams?
- Are the pallets sometimes placed only on one of the beams?
- Will there be point loading or UDL (Unified Distributed Load)?
- What deflection and Safety factor do we aim for?
This last question refers to the two most common strength levels for mesh shelves:
- 1:165 with safety factor 2.0 – the ANSI (American National Standards Institute) standard, being referred to all over the world
- 1:100 with safety factor 1.3 – the general lower safety level, being used among the pallet rack industry.
By following the ANSI standard, the safety factor is at least 2.0. In practice, this means that a shelf won’t collapse until it’s overloaded by twice the promised weight. The maximum ANSI deflection is 1:165. In short, the deflection in mm cannot be more than the depth of the rack divided by 165 (ex: 1,100/165=6.7 mm).
By following the general safety level, the safety factor is at least 1.3, meaning that the shelf will not collapse until it is overloaded with at least 30% extra load. The maximum deflection is 1:100, and by using the same example as above the maximum deflection will be 11 mm.
TROAX SHELVES
Troax is one of the leading manufacturers of wire mesh decking and offers a wide range of standard and customized solutions for different storage requirements. We provide various types of mesh shelving, including double and triple racks, all types of beams, and complete solutions with dividers. We have a rapid prototyping process that allows us to verify the customer’s needs and design the ideal mesh shelving solution.
Our standard mesh size is 50x100mm, but we also offer customized mesh sizes, such as 25x25mm, depending on the specific needs of the customer. The wire ends are rounded to ensure the safety of workers while handling the mesh shelves. Our shelves come with a safety wire in the front and back, providing additional safety and security. Additionally, the Omega reinforcements can be inverted to prevent the accumulation of dust, which ensures a clean and hygienic storage environment.
DIVIDERS
We offer various types of dividers to suit different storage requirements, including dividers with clips, dividers with an external wire, dividers with tubular frames, hanging dividers, and flue space dividers. These dividers help organize products on the shelves and maximize storage capacity. Our mesh dividers can be easily repositioned or removed, adapting to changing storage needs. This flexibility enables businesses to adjust the layout and organization of their storage space as their inventory evolves over time.
FINISH OPTIONS
Standard finish for shelves and dividers is pre-galvanized, which provides a protective layer against rust and corrosion. However, we also offer electro-zinc plating and powder coating finishes for customers who require extra protection against environmental factors or have specific aesthetic requirements.
IN SUMMARY
Troax offers a wide range of standard and customized mesh shelf and divider solutions to meet the unique needs of different customers. With our rapid prototyping process, customers can trust that they will get the perfect solution for their specific needs. The combination of mesh dividers with mesh shelves offers a range of benefits, including efficient organization, enhanced visibility, flexibility, improved airflow, efficient space utilization, load stability, compliance with regulations, and ease of installation. This synergy creates a cohesive storage solution that promotes streamlined operations, reduces errors, and contributes to a safer and more organized warehouse or distribution environment.
